Did you know that French is the only language (besides English) that’s officially spoken on every continent? Much of West Africa, like Morocco, is French-speaking, as are parts of Canada in North America, French Guiana in South America and Vanuatu in Oceania. And French is common in many countries even where it is not an official language as well. The UK is no exception, with thousands of French speakers living in its capital cities, like Edinburgh.
In fact, more than 5,000 people residing in the city speak French. Start learning the language with us at Listen & Learn and soon you’ll be fluent enough to communicate with other learners and native speakers who also live in Edinburgh. One of the best ways to find them is to join the weekly meetings organised by groups like Edinbourg Francais, where you can make new friends who love the French language as much as you!
French is the international language of cooking, film, fashion, theatre, the visual arts and dance, but it’s also a language that inspires fear in learners because of its initially tricky pronunciation. For example, you may have realised that words like beaucop do not pronounce the final p, or that the x in roux is silent. How will you know when or how to avoid pronouncing these silent letters? Don’t worry, French rules for pronunciation are much more consistent than in English. So, if you can master English, you can easily get the hang of the most common pronunciation rules for French with a little practise and guidance from us.
Would you like to know more about this fascinating language and become proficient? Then contact us at Listen & Learn and we will prepare a course that adapts to your needs and preferences. Would you like to learn through classic French movies like Amélie? Check. Are you interested in acquiring the language by using songs? Just reach out and we will implement the methods that best resonate with you, so learning is always productive and engaging.
French lessons of this type are broader and are aimed towards students with a variety of requirements. While all beginner level students will cover survival French—needed for short visits to countries where English isn't widely spoken, or if you wish to 'go local'—those studying French usually go in different directions at this point, depending on what they need. Those who have benefited from these French classes have been those investing in or buying property overseas, those married to overseas nationals, people setting off on a round-the-world trip, enthusiasts for French culture and those hoping to pass a specific exam in French. The people who would benefit the most from these French tutorials are those who feel they need to learn French to help them out in their business lives. For starters, learning salutations and business etiquette is essential. Once these have been practised, then reading and writing lessons can begin. Typical studiers have been those involved in international imports/exports, negotiations and acquisitions, multinational companies requiring another language and those working in any way with international governments and relevant administration. Even our simplest lesson for beginners will have students finishing the lessons with basic telephone and e-mail French as well as survival French should a visit to the country be necessary. Games are great instruments to help children acquire a new language while having fun. Luckily, the internet is full of websites that offer language games for free, such as Hello World. This site is full of interactive activities and songs that help kids learn basic French vocabulary, such as the alphabet, numbers, shapes and colours. Most of the games are classical ones, like tic tac toe, listen and match, etc. There is also a section that features expressions, like greetings, thanking others or asking for food, where children can listen to recordings of real conversations and repeat them while completing exercises.

Rolie Polie Olie is a Canadian television series produced by the Disney Channel that follows the adventures of Olie, a little robot and his friends on the moon. The robot is composed of several geometric shapes, so it's a great opportunity for your children to learn new words, such as circle (cercle), sphere (sphère) or square (carré). Also, it is spoken using the Canadian accent, so the series is also helpful to become acquainted with French Canadian.

My Listen & Learn tutor, Yann, made a huge effort to help me understand how the grammar works, and how to say things properly – these aren’t things you can learn from a book
