Where in the World Am I? (part II)
Is That an Alarm Pig?
One of my most worrying mornings was in a place called Canoa in Ecuador. It’s a cracking beach town and I was staying in some sort of beach cabin. I woke with a start at about 6 in the morning with the sound of a pig banging on my door. It took me about 10 minutes to work out where I was and that the noise was coming from a unique style of porcine alarm clock. During those 10 minutes I genuinely had no idea where I was or what the blooming noise at the door could be. I was actually wondering where my shirt and tie were so I could go to work in the bank I used to go to every morning.
Is This Weather Real?
Coming from Scotland I was pretty used to being woken up by the sound of rain on the window and several times in South America I was surprised to wake up with a beam of strong sun landing on my head. I had decided to learn Spanish by osmosis by the time I rented the flat I mentioned earlier. This meant staying up late eating and listening to Spanish music and then wakening up whenever my body clock told me to do so. Being so rudely interrupted by rays of tropical light always left me lying there for a few minutes half asleep and wondering where on earth I was.
