Driving Me Crazy (Part I)
Driving in a foreign country is a strangely exhilarating experience, although if you plan to do it here in South America then you need to be ready for a bit of culture shock. Dirt roads, crazy drivers and a lack of road signs are just part of the fun. On the British motorways my biggest concern was always whether to pop in for a feast at the nearest Little Chef or hold out for something a bit classier. Here things are more complicated and as well as the different way of driving you might also want to learn Spanish words which are going to come in useful.
Where is the Volante?
I was quite pleased with myself that I had learned a few words from watching football on the telly, and volante was one of them. This seemed to mean a midfield playmaker, so imagine my surprise when someone told me to take over the volante in their car. It turns out that it also means steering wheel and it is one of those words which translate as two different words, which kind of makes sense in your Spanish lessons but then again kind of doesn’t.
