Why Learning a Language Is Like Riding a Bike (Part II)
You Never Forget
People always say that you never forget how to ride a bike so I guess it must be true. The same principle applies to foreign languages as well. I went more than a year without using Spanish after I had learned it and when I then moved to Spain I hadn’t forgotten much at all. Sure, I was a bit rusty but nothing too terrible. The same applies to Italian lessons, although after their Italian lessons Leeds residents should look for every chance they get to use this wonderful language, even if it means eating an inordinate amount of pasta and pizza.
It Is Fun
Once I learned how to ride that bike I had brilliant fun riding around the place. I can still clearly recall how we went on picnics on our bikes and the day I went to the local reservoir to hunt frogs. Now that I am older and kinder to amphibians I don’t use my bike as much but I get a lot of pleasure out of speaking Spanish and listening to it. If you take the French courses London offers then you can enjoy speaking one of the world’s finest languages as well as listen to some great music. Speaking a second language is one of the most exciting things you can do and there is little or no risk of you skinning your knees while you do it.
