Did I Really Say That? (Part I)

I am not sure if I am the only person who finds that speaking a second language leads to me saying things which I wouldn’t say in my first language. Here are a few examples of the kind of strange thing I have said since I began to learn Spanish.

A Mayonnaise with Chips

I need to start by saying that I knew perfectly well that a milanesa is a breaded piece of meat and that mayonesa is mayonnaise. Where I used to live was right next to a street with loads of hamburger sellers and as the greasy aroma wafted up and through my window I decided to take a wander down. I wasn’t planning on eating anything but when a cook asked me what I wanted it seemed rude to say “nada”. Instead of this I asked for a “mayonesa”. To be fair he played along with the slip up and handed me a small sachet of mayonnaise while laughing away.
