Learn Spanish and Have a Feast (part I)

I just realised that I have talked a fair bit about food in South America but haven’t yet mentioned my favourite place to get a plate of what our Australian cousins would call tucker and my mum would call scran. In truth I don’t have a single favourite place so here are some of those which represent a special memory for me.
Street Toffee in Ecuador
The first place I have to mention is Ecuador because this is where I went to learn Spanish and where I realised that another world existed to be explored. This is where I first ate plantain bananas and empanadas but one thing stands out in my mind. In the lovely town of Baños they make toffee in the street. The shop owners slap a big blob of pre-toffee (as I like to think you call it) onto a hook and stretch it across the street in a rather brutal manner. Buying a toffee which you have just seen getting bashed about the place is a strange experience and sets you up nicely for the bizarre museum in town.
